IRAN ADMITS ENRICHED URANIUM PRODUCTION
"Iran confirmed Monday that it had converted 37 tons of uranium into gas, its first acknowledgment of
advances made in the production process for enriched uranium before it formally suspended nuclear
activity in November under international pressure," according to The Associated Press.
http://cato-subscriptions.org/ct.html?rtr=on&s=77z,cpx7,949,hk9u,k9e1,9zdt,1kws
"The announcement, which means Tehran is in a position to start enriching uranium quickly if it lifts
the suspension, comes as European negotiators are trying to seal an agreement to ensure that Iran's
nuclear program does not produce weapons."
"Iran is considered a long-standing nemesis. But that doesn't automatically make it a grave threat,"
argues Charles PeÒa, Cato's director of defense policy studies,
http://cato-subscriptions.org/ct.html?rtr=on&s=77z,cpx7,949,7hbg,8j4o,9zdt,1kws
in "Iran: Isolation or Engagement."
http://cato-subscriptions.org/ct.html?rtr=on&s=77z,cpx7,949,f6gw,fiki,9zdt,1kws
"Efforts to convince the Iranians to give up their quest for nuclear weapons should not be abandoned,
but success in that long-shot strategy cannot be the only acceptable outcome. Other options must be
explored, such as how to limit the size and scope of Iran's nuclear weapons program and arsenal so that it
is not a direct threat to the U.S., andensuring that weapons, materials, and technology are not
transferred to terrorists."

Social Security: Getting Out the Facts
As the Social Security debate unfolds, CEPR continues to play a leading role in informing the media,
policymakers and the public about the facts. Because the public has not been well informed in the past, it
has opened the door to distortions and misconceptions about the true state of the Social Security
program and its future.
Through media and public appearances, analysis and commentary, the Social Security Reporting Review, and
an online Accurate Benefits Calculator (ABC), weíve underscored several fundamental facts:
* The current Social Security system is fundamentally financially sound. It can pay all scheduled
benefits for decades to come, with no fixes whatsoever. Making it solvent past 2052 (the year that the
nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office calculates it will first face a shortfall), will require smaller
payroll tax increases than those undertaken in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s (the last time the
payroll tax was increased). For more information, please click here.
* Projections of stock returns for private accounts are unrealistic. If those projections were
somehow to come true, then the economy would perform better than projectedÖ and the Social Security
ìcrisisî would disappear. For more information, please click here.
* The Social Security Trust Fund really exists; it is not made up of worthless ìIOUsî as proponents
of privatization like to claim. Talking about the Trust Fund in that way is analogous to saying that the
United States will default on the government bonds in the Trust Fund, something that has never happened
and which would have widespread consequences.
* If policymakers truly want to improve the well-being of current and future generations, they
should focus on a real crisis: the U.S. health care system. For more information, please click here.
Weíve been making these points for years and are glad that they are now increasingly recognized by the
public. In the past couple of months, weíve produced a steady stream of analysis on these and other
aspects of Social Security, such as:
* a joint paper on stock returns that Dean co-authored with economists Brad DeLong and Paul Krugman
and presented at a Brooking Institute seminar, and which will be published in the Brookings Papers on
Economic Activity.
* Heather Bousheyís analysis documenting that more low-income children live in households that receive a
Social Security check than receive a TANF check. Click here for the paper.
* David Rosnick and Deanís analysis that rising health care costs pose a greater threat to future living
standards than do the minimal tax increases that would eliminate Social Securityís projected shortfall
over the next 75 years. Click here for the paper.
* Deanís comparison between the Social Security shortfall and the financial strain of maintaining the
United Statesí standing as the worldís pre-eminent military power, if that continues to be U.S. policy.
Our analysis is drawing much attention. In addition to being circulated by the Center for Community
Change, Coalition on Human Needs, National Coalition of Womenís Organizations, Americans United to
Protect Social Security and other groups, itís now featured in PublicPensionsOnline, Our Social
Security/health care paper was the subject of a laudatory column by Washington Post columnist David
Broder, "Fix Health Care Firstî, the Post editorial board responded, and CEPR responded to the Post

Bush, Posada & Terrorism Hypocrisy
George W. Bush has insisted on "moral clarity" in the War on Terror, but he and his brother Jeb have
ignored the principle against harboring terrorists -- at least when the fugitive is Luis Posada Carriles, a
violent Cuban exile with strong political support in the powerful Cuban-American community of South
Florida. The American news media also is helping out by mostly treating Posada as a non-story, even though
the New York Times did finally put the Posada question on Page One. May 10, 2005

Real-Life 'National Treasure' -- in Reverse
Walt Disney's action film, "National Treasure," is a fanciful hunt for hidden treasure with characters
following complex clues left behind by the Founding Fathers. In real-life Washington, the "October
Surprise mystery" -- whether Republicans sabotaged Jimmy Carter in 1980 with behind-the-back dealings
with Iran -- represents how the world really works, with modern-day leaders doing all they can to destroy
any clues that might lead the nation to an honest conclusion. May 6, 2005

Let's vote.
Ballsy move by Harry Reid. He's either got the votes and he's calling Frist's bluff, or he's playing one
heck of a game of chicken. From a statement just released:
ìI still consider this confrontation entirely unnecessary and irresponsible. The White House
manufactured this crisis. Since Bush took office, the Senate confirmed 208 of his judicial nominations
and turned back only 10, a 95% confirmation rate. Instead of accepting that success and avoiding further
divisiveness and partisanship in Washington, the President chose to pick fights instead of judges by
resubmitting the names of the rejected nominees.
This fight is not about seven radical nominees; it's about clearing the way for a Supreme Court nominee
who only needs 51 votes, instead of 60 votes. They want a Clarence Thomas, not a Sandra Day O'Connor or
Anthony Kennedy or David Souter. George Bush wants to turn the Senate into a second House of
Representatives, a rubberstamp for his right wing agenda and radical judges. That's not how America
works.
I believe there are two options for avoiding the nuclear showdown, which so many of us believe is bad for
the Senate, and bad for America.
But I want to be clear: we are prepared for a vote on the nuclear option. Democrats will join responsible
Republicans in a vote to uphold the constitutional principle of checks and balances. ì
ìReid lays out two alternatives -- Reid's proposal from a few weeks ago, or a regular vote to change the
rules (which requires 67 votes). And he throws the guantlet: ì
"Either of these options offers a path away from the precipice of the nuclear option. But if neither of
these options is acceptable to you, let's vote."
I think he's got the votes to stop it, or he's playing one hell of a bluff.

Give your Members of Congress Feedback on Key Privacy Vote
The rise in identity theft has put many people’s personal information at risk. Now, legislation passed
by Congress will create a ripe target for identity thieves by allowing the government to compile your
most personal information -- such as your name, address, photo, birth certificate, social security number
and perhaps even your DNA -- into a national database. Thousands of government employees will have
access to this giant network, dramatically increasing the risk of your personal information being stolen.
Faced with the outcry from concerned activists like you, supporters of this legislation -- the REAL ID
Act -- were only able to pass it by attaching it to an unrelated emergency appropriations bill. This bill
will soon be signed into law by President Bush. We need to reach out to our Members of Congress today
to express our profound disappointment that they did not remove the REAL ID bill from the unrelated
appropriations bill >>Tell me more about this issue before I act.

New Book Asserts: Before Star Wars, the CIA Used "The Force"
PR Web via Yahoo! News Tue, 10 May 2005 0:00 AM PDT
(PRWEB) - AUSTIN, TX (PRWEB) May 10, 2005 -- A new book details the United States government's
use of "The Force" in defense of national security. "Reading the Enemy's Mind: Inside Star Gate ?
America's Psychic Espionage Program," by retired military intelligence Major Paul H. Smith (Tor/Forge,
2005) tells us that, unbeknownst to most Star Wars movie fans, the U.S. government began tapping the
power of The Force as early as 1972. In that year, the Central Intelligence Agency first contracted with
a physicist and his associates at a government think-tank to research and apply remote viewing, a real
variety of ESP, to ferret out the secrets of our Cold-War adversaries. The effort continued in secret
for nearly a quarter of a century.

According to the Washington Post account of the 4/28/05 poll by Gallup, among Democrats, the top two
things they would say to Bush are "get out of Iraq" and "you're doing a bad job." The top two things
independents would say are "get out of Iraq" and "leave Social Security alone." The top two things
Republicans would say are "you're doing a good job" -- and "get out of Iraq."
So, the leaders of the United States and the United Kingdom hold their countries up as the world's
greatest democracies (they're certainly the most internationally arrogant) but in neither place does the
majority view on the war have a voice in government leadership? It says something about our democracies,
don't you think?

HAND GRENADE FOUND AT BUSH RALLY
Europe - Georgia
A hand grenade was found near US President George Bush during his
visit to Georgia, security officials say.
Georgian officials say the hand grenade was inactive and therefore
did not pose any danger to either President Bush or Georgian President
Mikhail Saakashvili.
It was found 30m (100 feet) away from where Mr Bush was addressing a
huge crowd in Tbilisi's Freedom Square.
The US Secret Service said it had been told of Tuesday's incident
after Mr Bush had left the ex-Soviet republic.

Vanity Fair last year, so many of you know of her (she was also a hostage for a period of time).

GIs in Colombia Ammo Probe Back in U.S.
Americas - Colombia, United States
11 May 2005 - AP
Two U.S. soldiers detained for allegedly attempting to sell ammunition to Colombian right-wing
paramilitary groups have been flown to the United States, where they were placed in custody, officials
said Tuesday.
The soldiers' quiet departure for the United States came despite widespread calls from Colombian
lawmakers and senior officials for them to face trial here. The case has embarrassed Washington, coming
less than two months after five U.S. service members were detained for allegedly smuggling cocaine
aboard a military aircraft to the United States.
Warrant Officer Allan N. Tanquary and Sgt. Jesus Hernandez, who have diplomatic immunity within
Colombia, were flown to the United States on Friday and placed in custody of the Defense Department, a
U.S. Embassy spokesman said after a reporter asked about the pair's whereabouts.
The case and other allegations of wrongdoing by U.S. troops in Colombia have sparked ire in this Andean
nation, which is battling a long-running insurgency fueled by drug trafficking.
"OUT OF CONTROL," read the cover of the newsmagazine Semana this week, referring to the
American soldiers who are supposed to be helping Colombia's effort.
U.S. Ambassador William Wood said Friday that he would allow local investigators to question
Tanquary and Hernandez, but hours later they were flown out of the country, granted diplomatic immunity
under a 1974 treaty. It wasn't immediately clear whether they were questioned before boarding the plane.
The two soldiers were arrested May 3 at a luxury estate near a military base southwest of Bogota and
accused of plotting to deliver 40,000 rounds of ammunition to a paramilitary group. The outlawed
paramilitary factions have been waging a war of assassinations and massacres against leftist rebels and
their suspected collaborators.
The United States has denied secretly helping the paramilitary United Self-Defense Forces of
Colombia, or AUC, which is on the U.S. list of terrorist organizations.
Tanquary and Hernandez were among hundreds of U.S. servicemen and contractors stationed in Colombia
as part of a multibillion-dollar program funded by U.S. taxpayers.
The two are members of the 7th Special Forces Group based at Fort Bragg, N.C., spokesman Lt. Col.
Hans Bush said Tuesday. The unit has made regular rotations to Colombia and other Latin American
countries since the early 1980s, when it became involved in counter-narcotics, The Fayetteville Observer
reported Tuesday.
